When supplying power grids with a large number of energy consumers, it is important to ensure that control, accounting and protective equipment can be concentrated in one place. The benefit is obvious – in addition to increasing manageability, it protects equipment from unwanted external influences and unauthorized access. Input-distribution devices do this task well – a universal type of low-voltage devices suitable for use in residential buildings and public institutions, as well as in production.

What is an input distribution device (IDD)?

In a generalized form, an input-distribution device of the VRU type is an electrical installation for receiving, accounting and distributing energy resources in three-phase alternating current systems. The IDD also performs protective functions – it stabilizes the operation of the network, smooths out interference, prevents current leaks, overloads, short circuits, overheating and other abnormal situations. A distinctive feature of the IDD is the ability to quickly turn on and off electrical appliances connected to suitable and outgoing power lines.

Varieties of input distribution devices (IDD)

The set of the IDD varies widely; key parameters are calculated individually and displayed in the project documentation. A suitable lead-in switchgear is selected depending on the functionality and properties of power grids; different types of IDD are categorized according to different criteria:

  • rated current – for 100, 250, 400, 630 A;
  • type of construction – suspended and floor;
  • installation site – external and internal (degree of electrical protection – from IP31 to IP65);
  • number of entries – from one to four; the majority of IDDs have one or two main inputs and one additional for a diesel generator.

Design features of input-distribution devices (IDD)

The bulk of ASPs are made in the form of one-sided panels – welded structures from a bent metal profile, maintenance of the input distribution devices is carried out only on one side. The IDD can include one or several panels; multi-panel systems form an input-distribution board (VRShch); based on the purpose and configuration, there are three types of panels:

  • introductory – specialize in receiving current;
  • distribution – distribute power supply between local consumers and keep track of consumed energy;
  • introductory distribution – combine functions of the two previous types.

Mounting panels with sets of switching and metering equipment are placed inside a frameless metal box or frame cabinet. Input and output of supply and outgoing power lines can be located both from above and from below, conductive elements are hidden behind the front panel. A functional block is mounted on the basis of the IDD switching device, the basic equipment is limited to the required minimum of electrical equipment, which includes:

  • circuit breaker with RCD; some circuits use a switch or disconnector;
  • arresters, busbars and transformers;
  • group circuit breakers and residual current devices;
  • busbars, wires, cables and terminal blocks;
  • three-phase energy consumption meter.

Additional panel equipment is used as needed; depending on the operating conditions, the VRShch is equipped with voltmeters and ammeters, capacitors, quartz and fuses, voltage limiters, various relays and protective devices. The input apparatus is structurally separated from the metering one, which, in turn, is also divided into two compartments – for the meter and for the transformers.

On boards with two or more inputs, ATS systems with voltage recovery circuits are installed, which provide switching between power sources in case of failure of one of the lines. ATS installation is mandatory for the first category of energy consumers; for other categories it is allowed to use panels with a manual drive.

The principle of operation of input distribution devices (IDD)

Reception of energy resources from the main line is carried out through a circuit breaker, to which the supply wire is connected; it is important that the rated current of the input device meets the requirements of the network. At the same time, the parameters of the input current are meIDDred; in addition to the counter, ammeters and voltmeters can be used; if the current characteristics deviate from the rated values, the circuit breaker disconnects the circuit.

After the input device, arresters are connected, through which the wires are connected in phases; if necessary, the voltage is corrected by transformers. When powerful pulses appear, the arresters activate the IDD protective systems and turn off the current supply. To distribute power to groups of conductors of local pantographs, automatic machines with a protection function are used that equalize the load between phases.

Spheres of application of input-distribution devices (IDD)

The operation of IDD in different areas has its own specifics: in multi-storey buildings, public institutions and small enterprises, one- and two-sided boards with lead-in and distribution panels are used. The panels are located in close proximity and are connected by wires, electrical machines and lighting devices are connected to different power lines. The accounting department is mounted separately, package switches, magnetic starters and intermediate relays can be installed additionally.

In private households, where there are separate buildings in the yard, after the main IDD, switchgears are mounted for each building. At production facilities with high energy consumption, block structures are used along with standard panel IDDs. Particular attention is paid to protective equipment: in addition to the input devices, switches and fuses, fuses, etc. are installed.

Peculiarities of switchgear cubicles

  • SM6 cubicles are air-insulated, this solution is most similar to a solution based on domestic KSO cubicles, they have the ability to easily change their configuration of the switchgear.
  • RM6 cells have a maintenance-free sealed tank filled with SF6 gas, due to which they have significantly smaller overall dimensions and do not require maintenance.
  • PremSet cells are a new development of the Schneider Electric company, just appearing on our market, they have compact overall dimensions due to the use of cast insulation and a fairly competitive cost.
  • MCset cells are introductory distribution cells that are analogous to domestic switchgear type cells, the main difference is high resistance to short circuits, there is complete separation of compartments, it is used at power plant substations, high voltage distribution substations and high power transformer substations.

Switchgears can be equipped with vacuum and SF6 circuit breakers.
